IPsec protocols主要可以分為兩大種類：
1. packet handling
主要工作是將 normal IP packets 轉成 secure IPsec packets
對packets修改的動作有以下幾種，
加密(encryption)
解密(decryption)
簽章(signing)
封裝(encapsulation)
解封裝(decapsulation)
因為由於對packets的修改動作要求速度、效率以及低延遲
所以這些動作都由 kernel 來完成
